World Champs on the horizon for De la Porte

Following a frantic middle part of the year where he raced extensively in Europe, Durban-based triathlete Ben de la Porte is back home and preparing for the upcoming ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, the world championships, in Gold Coast city in September. DeLaPorte The 18 year-old former Clifton College pupil set himself some tough goals for 2018 and following a busy start to the year he is happy when reflecting on what he has achieved so far. “Up to now, my year has gone really well,” the Varsity College athlete said. “I have achieved most of the goals which I set out at the beginning of the year. “My season started off at KZN champs in January, followed by the Cape Town World Cup which was my first international race of the year. I then had SA Champs, where I managed to win the junior men, followed by Africa Champs in Morocco where I tied for the win – my goal was to win both of these races. “My final few races have been in Europe where I raced six races in five weeks, my goal was to come in the top 10 in every race which I managed to do and came third in my final individual race.” With the busy period behind for the meantime, De la Porte has been working hard at Prime with biokineticist Gavin Muir, getting himself prepared for his world championship attempt. “I have just had a break as I was exhausted when I returned from Europe. I started training again recently so my focus is entirely geared towards being fit and healthy for World Champs. “I have been working closely with Prime over the last few years. I have in particular been working hard with Gavin (Muir). He has helped me a lot in improving my strength, as has Dr Subban. “Dr Subban helped me extensively throughout the first last half of 2017 as well as the first half of this year,” De la Porte explained. With a World Championship’s coming up in the near future, De la Porte hasn’t cast his mind too far into the future, however he does have long-term goals that he is focused on. “I want to get myself onto the WTS Circuit and from there I want to be able to go to the Olympic Games one day,” he added hopefully.
